He gets swept into the story by accident, following a lead on a rogue scientist seeking Verdalis.
When he crosses into The Tenebris Veil, he is trapped in a reality that contradicts everything he believes.
His resistance causes him to struggle harder, making him more susceptible to The Wanting—his doubt becomes a beacon for deception and illusion.

Cassian resists everything until he is forced into a direct mystical experience—perhaps a moment where Verdalis reveals a past life connection between him and the Pattern-Weaver.

From a young age, Cassian was sensitive to distortion. He saw the “beauty” of Vorathis as a sickness. He noticed when people’s eyes clouded, when language masked manipulation, when desire became prison. He often fell into extended states of silence, staring at light through glass, attuned to patterns others didn’t notice.
He never fit in with the status-driven culture of his peers. Quiet. Gentle. Undeniably perceptive.
